THE FLIP PHONE IS BACK!

Best Foldable phone 2020?

Some of us may remember the end of the 90’s, beginning of the noughties when flip phones were all the rage with LG, Motorola and Samsung leading the charge. Well fast forward 20 years and flip phones are back with cutting edge foldable screen technology. Samsung are the first of the big boys to have their phone on the market and LG have their hybrid. 2020 looks like an exciting year for the foldable phone with OPPO, Motorola, Xiaomi and the exciting Huawei coming soon. The only thing missing is the usual innovation from Apple or will we even see an apple foldable phone before the year is out?

Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G

Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G Back in stock soon

Prices range from £1879 – £1900

Screen

The Galaxy Fold 5G has a stunning 7.3inch AMOLED display made of revolutionary polymer that is layered for slim flexibility. Tested up to 200,000 folds, it looks and feels fantastic and when the phone is open you barely notice the phone is supposed to fold. When open, this really does feel like you are using a tablet.

Folding Mechanism

The folding mechanism is an engineering marvel. The hinge delivers symmetrical movement that locks the hinge into place so that the phone folds seamlessly like a book. The only drawback with the mechanism is that it uses magnets so the phone cannot be left to close to any cards etc that may have a magnetic strip.

Design

When folded the phone is sleek, small, looks great and you can really feel the quality in your hand.

Hardware

The Galaxy Fold boasts a new super processor, 12 GB RAM and 512 GB internal storage – this phone is superior to my PC!

Camera

The Galaxy does not fall short in this category, the Galaxy has a 10mp selfie camera when the phone is closed and you can choose between 16mp Ultra wide, 12mp wide angle and telephoto camera’s.

Battery

With up to 44 hours of talktime, this is more innovation from Samsung as the new wireless charge dual cell battery can also act as a wireless charger for other QI certified devices such as your wireless Galaxy earbuds or smartwatch.

Connectivity

5G with upload and download speeds of up to 1.2GBPS

Overall

This phone is a modern technological marvel and is the peak of innovation and design right now. The price may be high but what you get in return is the best foldable phone on the market right now and is going to take some beating. The only slight drawback is that the magnets in the phone means that it cannot be left near bank cards etc but if you are like me and keep your phone and wallet in different pockets or parts of your bag, this is not an issue. This is a big win from Samsung.

Pro’s – Well Engineered, great design, Screen size, Wireless earbuds as standard, facial recognition, fingerprint scanner

Con’s – Uses magnets, Price

LG G8X

Price £885.95

Screen

Now although this is a foldable phone, the LG G8X is more of a hybrid due to the fact it has a dual screen and LG have not yet used their LG bendi technology – maybe they are saving this for future generations. The screen is a dual 6.4inch OLED and although the pixel count is lower than the higher priced competitors, you won’t notice.

Design

Personally, I’m not a fan of the looks of this phone. I do not like the look of the hard plastic on the back and the phone looks and feels cheap. This is not a phone for those seeking insta fame.

Hardware

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Octa-core processor, 6 GB RAM, 128GB internal storage.

Camera

32mp front facing camera, 32mp rear facing camera

Battery

Up to 12 hours talktime

Connectivity

4G

Overall

The LG G8X is a good all round phone. This is not a phone to keep up with Samsung or the Mate X from Huawei when it is released but this is definitely a very good and cheap foldable phone although technically a hybrid.

Pro’s – Cheap, good battery life, dual screen perfect for multi tasking

Con’s – Not foldable technology, design, feels cheap

Coming Soon

Xiaomi Flex

Price – Predicted £1000 TBC

Screen

The flex will boast a massive 10.1 inch AMOLED display. Like the upcoming Huawei Mate X, this phone will have a wrap around external screen unlike the internal screen available on the Samsung Galaxy. I’m not quite sold on this idea yet as keeping 1 screen scratch free is difficult enough without the whole case of the phone being one big screen.

Folding Mechanism

Looks great and Xiaomi claim that this phone will flex almost indefinitely

Design

Although I am not sold on the idea of an external screen, the phone actually looks fantastic and again very similar to the Mate X.

Hardware

The OPPO phone will have the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, 8BG RAM and 128 GB internal storage so not too shabby.

Camera

24.0MP + 12.0MP dual back cameras and 16.0MP front camera.

Battery

3400mAh Built-in with up to 12 hours of talktime

Connectivity

4G

Overall

Although the phone boasts an excellent screen and great looks, this phone will not be able to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Fold or the upcoming Huawei Mate X. This does look to be a great phone and will be the best foldable phone 2020 on a budget.

Pro’s – Looks great, foldable technology, price

Con’s – Only 4G capable

Huawei Mate X

Price Range – Predicted £1900 – £2200

Screen

8inch OLED. Like the OPPO, this phone has the wrap around external screen. Although this looks amazing, I think I would be put off by the price of having it replaced if I broke it.

Folding mechanism

This is Huawei’s new flagship model and they claim to have spent thousands of hours perfecting the folding technology

Design

Looks great, stylish and sleek. Just worried about the external wrap around screen

Hardware

Huawei claim this to be the fastest smartphone of its generation with 5G chipset achieves the industry-leading 5G download speed. The HUAWEI Mate X with Balong 5000 officially unlocks a new experience in the 5G era.

Camera

Again, Huawei will have the technology to rival the Samsung as a big force in this area. This phone boasts the new intelligent Leica system. I will update more when this phone is available here.

Battery

Like the Samsung, this phone has dual cell technology for longer lasting battery life. Unlike the Samsung, Huawei have developed a supercharger that claims to be able to charge the phone from 1% to 85% in 35 minutes – Amazing if true

Connectivity

Like the Samsung, the Mate X will be 5G compatible

Overall

The Mate X definitely looks like it will be competing with Samsung for top spot in this division. This behemoth has already sold out in China and we are likely to see a shortage on release here too. This will definitely be vying for best foldable phone 2020.

Motorola Razr 2020

Price – Pre-order 26/12/19 $1499.99

Screen

Keeping with tradition, the Razr is the first of our phones on this list to have a horizontal fold meaning the phone will be very small when not in use. The display is a 6.2 inch OLED making it the smallest of our bunch so far. This screen does allow for great cinematic viewing.

Folding Mechanism

No expense spared and this is the Razr’s shining moment. The fold is fantastic and smooth and when opened the crease becomes invisible.

Design

For those that remember the millennium and the first generation of flip phones, this phone is nostalgia at its finest.

Hardware

Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage.

Camera

5mp front facing camera and 16mp dual pixel main lens.

Battery

The Motorola Turbo charger claims to give hours of life within just a few minutes and up to 22 hours of talk time

Connectivity

4G

Overall

For anyone looking for Matrix-esque nostalgia, this is your phone. Quality video playback and a great screen make up for what this phone lacks in other areas. All in all, this is a beautiful device. Will it be crowned the best foldable phone 2020?

Pro’s – Beautiful video playback, quality folding screen

Con’s – Smaller screen compared to the other vertically folding phones

Summary

In short, this division will have something for everyone. We have the nostalgic Razr, the Hybrid LG and the more affordable Xiaomi. We are also expecting big things from the Huawei and Razr although the clear winner at this time is the Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G. The Galaxy is sleek, well made and powerful, this is the phone of the future and the best foldable phone 2020.
